Info Hub Help

Info Hub has been designed for maximum simplicity and flexibility. There are four main functions that can be performed:

Other functionality:

  • Login - permits access to the restricted areas namely those that control adding and deleting references.
  • Links - a list of links to web sites that provided resources which were used to develop this application.
  • Help - this document

Click on any of these topics for more information. See the todo list, for future planned features.

Search:
The main function of any knowledge base is to search for the relevant information.
It is best to first try the simple search, especially if there are very few documents that have been stored. The type of resource found will be noted by the icon that appears next to it.
If that does not get produce the desired results try the advanced search. In particular you can try searching the title for your key word as title keywords do not make into the main index.

Browse:
The browse function allows you so manually search through the index for a reference.
To return to a height level in the knowledge base click the link to the higher folder located at the top of the listing. To return to the top of the hierarchy click the browse link on the navigation bar.

Add:
There are three types of references that can be added to Info Hub:

  • Folders - new directories to contain new topics.
  • Documents - that are uploaded from your computer.
  • Links - a web link to a page on the Internet.

Folders should always be placed in the appropriate location, before adding a folder be sure that a similar one does not yet exists and that you are placing it in the correct location.
Documents are uploaded from your local disk. You should note that only html and text documents are fully indexed (other documents are indexed by title only) so if possible try to only add html documents Info Hub. You can convert you Microsoft Word documents to html from with in Microsoft Word itself.
Links are connected to external web pages. They must be specified in the form http://someplace.com. Tip: If you do not want to type the entire address open a new browser window and surf to the page once there you can cut the address out of the address bar and paste it into the URL field. Info Hub will try to download and index the entire link page, but if it cannot do so it will only index the title, so try to be as specific as possible.
You need to have contributor status to add references to Info Hub.

Delete:
Items that are no longer valid or needed can be deleted. You need administrator status to remove references from Info Hub. You can delete an item by browsing for it, and clicking the delete button next to the item. If you do not see a delete button try logging in. Only administrators can delete or see the delete button.
Note: There is update function, to update delete and then add the reference.

Todo:
I would like to add the following administrative features to Info Hub at some time in the future:

  • Move Folder - giving the administrator the ability to move around folders in the hierarchy.
  • Add many documents - giving the administrator the ability to add many documents at once and not specify titles for all of them. This would be especially useful for adding a set of Java Docs.
